REPORTS Week ending 5/23/10
FISHING
Bass Fishing:
James/Chick Rivers:
The spawn is over here for the most part. In the James, you can catch the fish moving out of the pits on soft plastics and smaill topwaters. Some of the fish have moved out into the main river already, where cranks and small plastics will do the trick on jettys and main river wood. On the Chick, the topwater action has started up and the frog bite is on in the pads upriver; downriver, small poppers and cranks will catch you some nice chunks on the lower end of the tide.
Potomac River:
Right now ther is a mixed bag of all stages of the spawn. Some fish are already recouped and smashing topwater frogs and buzzbaits. Others have yet to spawn and will take moving baits like chatter baits and rattle traps as well as the tried a true weightless YUM Dinger. Others are spawning now in their tradtional places and can be worked over with a variety of plastics.
Buggs Island:
You can catch them with several different baits and techniques. The water levels are fluctuating with the rains and you need to adjust to the changes. 90% of the spawning is done here...... some are still guarding fry in the shallows and can be caught with topwater or plastics. Other have already made it out to their summer haunts, where carolina rigged plastics, football jigs, and big worms will catch them anywhere from 10 - 14ft.
Lake Gaston:
A mixed bag of spawning activity here as well. Down lake, there are a few left on the beds, but most are done and either guarding fry or slid out just a little deeper. Up lake we are still seeing some on the beds and some that have yet to spawn.
